Islamabad, Pakistan – Former Pakistani jailed Prime Minister Imran Khan's address was in an audio clip installed through artificial intelligence (AI) to address his virtual rally in the South Asian country.
Khan gave the four-minute address Sunday night using the clip that had been laid over with a video of him containing his AI-generated image along with photos from earlier Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) rallies and previous speeches by him.
In another record-breaking development, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed gaining as many as five million views on various social media platforms including Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter along with other networks in their virtual rally amid reported internet disruption all over the country.
They engineered this internet-based rally as a strategic workaround to the government ban on public rallies that the PTI corresponded with their preparations for the upcoming general elections scheduled on 8th February.
AI-produced voice of Imran Khan, who played the voice of the party while in jail, lamented the restrictions imposed on public rallies and highlighted the problems faced by the party including the arrest of leaders and alleged harassment of their families.
While Khan remains in the jail since August, facing charges pertaining to illegal selling of state gifts, he maintains denial of the charges. The speech generated by AI underlined the sacrifices made by PTI members throughout the extended period of crackdown marked with numerous arrests and resignations.
The PTI's innovative use of AI won accolades in as much that it will be able to navigate the restrictions on freedom of assembly and speech as well. The caution was sounded out against its possible misuse to even spread disinformation and manipulation of the electoral outcomes in political landscape.
There were warnings of occurring internet disturbances during the virtual event where the opposition party blamed the government for intentional intervention. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority however denied an internet outage, asking to be cautious regarding sharing unconfirmed news.
